Paul Munch, BHS '67 (1949-2017)

Just received this very sad note from Carolyn...
"I'm heartbroken to tell you my wonderful husband, Paul, passed away November 15th. We met at Valley College in 1967 and have been together ever since."

Obituary
Paul Munch
Feb. 10, 1949 — Nov. 15, 2017

Paul Munch, a 30-year resident of Davis, passed away Nov. 15, 2017.

Paul was born in Glendale, Calif., in 1949. He enjoyed growing up in Burbank where he and his pals had a great time. He graduated from Burbank High in 1967. He attended Valley College for two years and transferred to UC Santa Barbara where he received his B.S. (1972) in zoology. He received his M.S. at San Diego State University (1975) in zoology. He then attended the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and received his Ph.D. (1985) in human physiology and molecular biophysics.

When he was at Valley College in 1967, he met Carolyn Diehl. He and Carolyn married in the Diehl family back yard in 1972.

After Galveston, Paul had a two-year postdoctoral Fellowship at UC San Diego where he began his career in biomedical research. He then moved to Davis and worked at UC Davis for 21 years, retiring in 2008.

Paul had many and varied interests. He delighted in making the multi-layer chocolate cake for his and Carolyn’s wedding. He participated in many competitive sports: cross country running, track, volleyball, racquetball, baseball and tennis. He also enjoyed being on the water to surf, canoe and sail. He spent a lot of time reading, learning and problem-solving. He enjoyed projects around the house, including putting on a new roof and making a picket fence.

He was also quite an adventurer. He worked as a seasonal national park ranger for eight summers in Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks. For three of those summers he and Carolyn lived in the wilderness in a one-room cabin at 10,500 feet with no electricity, bathroom or running water. They loved to travel in their VW van and went on many trips throughout the U.S. and Canada fishing, hiking, biking, canoeing, and sailing.

They traveled the Baja Peninsula on a surfing trip. They drove the Alaska Highway to Fairbanks and took the Alaska Ferry through the intercostal waterway to Seattle. While in Galveston, they bought a small catamaran with another couple. Paul and Dave sailed the intercoastal waterway from Mexico to Galveston. They also sailed around Galveston Island. Paul and Carolyn also enjoyed many tours to Europe.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, Maxine Munch and Also Munch, and his brother Norm. His survivors include Carolyn Munch, his loving wife of 45 years, sister Dianna McCarthy, sister-in-law Kathy Helliesen (Bob), nephew Rob Helliesen, nieces Emily Helliesen Day (Adam) and Elizabeth Helliesen, great-niece Hattie Day and cousins Martha Schultz and John Hoehn.

Paul and Carolyn had an especially close and loving relationship. He was a fun, thoughtful, hard-working, honorable man. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Paul lived with Lewy body dementia for several years. His last year was extremely difficult. Paul’s family would like to extend a special thank you to two of his excellent caregivers, Tiffany and Wendy. Yolo Hospice also was very helpful.

A service of remembrance will be held Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road, Davis, CA 95616.

Donations may be made to www.yolohospice.org or www.communicarehc.org.

OCT 24, 2017 UPDATE FROM FACEBOOK
A beautiful tribute by daughter, Becky Earle

I've been fairly silent on Facebook because I couldn't seem to form the words, but I think I'm ready......

My mother passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday evening. It was very sudden and unexpected. She had shoulder surgery on Tuesday and had struggled during the week. We had been in and out of the ER three times. She was home resting in her recliner. When we went to wake her up to give her medication, she didn't respond. Coda (Jon & Cara's dog) noticed she was gone first. He nudged into her and whimpered. At that moment, she was gone. The paramedics and doctor worked on her for at least an hour to no avail. We didn't ask for an autopsy, but we're fairly sure she died from a blood clot because it came on so suddenly.

There are not enough words to express how wonderful my mother is/was. I was very lucky and blessed to be her daughter. I'm sure there were plenty of times when I drove her a bit crazy, but she was always full of love and support. She had my back no matter what. She wasn't just my mother, but my best friend. She had wonderful advice when I needed it and lent an ear to listen to whatever problem I had. She was never judgemental; she only wanted what was best for me and tried to help however she could. After she retired, she would visit my classroom at least 2-3 times a year to help. She said it was payback for when I helped her at school, but I think she just liked to do it.

I can't remember who it was, but a cousin mentioned that she was the glue that held the extended family together. There couldn't be truer words. She loved all her family (immediate and extended) more than we probably will ever know. She loved family reunions, gatherings and camping trips. It was a lot of work, but I think she even enjoyed gathering the Jones Newsletters because she was reading about her family while she put it together.

I miss her so much! I know that she is reunited with her parents. I know she is running and swimming without any pain. That makes me so happy. Yet, my life will never be the same now that she is gone. I'll just have to take it a day at a time and try to live my life in a way that would honor her. I already know of many traditions that she started and we plan to continue. Extended family may be relieved to know I plan to continue her work with the Jones Newsletter. I've always known it was my job when she was done. I just never expected it to be this soon.

I am blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family nearby. I feel so supported and loved. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I am grateful for all the kind words that you have shared on Facebook. In the near future, I will be gathering those for remembrance. If you would like to elaborate or share those with me again, I would appreciate them being sent to my email: beckyearle@gmail.com.

OCTOBER 25, 2017 UPDATE
From Facebook, Barbara's Obituary:

Barbara Louise Onstott Earle passed away peacefully at home in her sleep on October 20, 2017. She was born on January 6, 1949 in Burbank, California to William Henry & Merle Jones Onstott. She was the second of three daughters. She grew up in Burbank and graduated with a teaching degree from Brigham Young University. She taught elementary school in Tooele & Spanish Fork, Utah before traveling to Australia on a teacher exchange program. There she met and married her husband, Rodney Stan Earle on August 14, 1976.

In 1978, Barbara and Rodney moved to Bloomington, Indiana while Rodney attended graduate school. In 1981, they moved to Wilmington, North Carolina and adopted their twin sons, Jonathan William and Jason Stanley. Two years later, Barbara surprised Rodney with the pregnancy of their daughter, Rebecca Lynn. In 1993, Barbara and her family moved to American Fork, Utah. When her children were older, she went back to teaching 6th grade. Another move took the family to Lehi, Utah. After retirement in 2010, she filled her time with family.

Barbara enjoyed her weekly hot tub gatherings with retired teacher friends. For 20 years, she produced and edited the Jones Family Newsletter. She has served as Young Women Camp Director, Early Morning Seminary Teacher, Ward Historian, Chorister, Primary Teacher and other callings. Barbara took great pleasure in making crafts. She crocheted afghan blankets for each of her grandchildren. Barbara loved the outdoors. She was an avid camper and swimmer. She enjoyed tending the pool in the backyard. Summer highlights always included the family camping trip to Palisade State Park. She also enjoyed the early spring trips to San Diego, California.

She is survived by her husband, Rodney, her children, Jonathan (Cara Dahl), Jason (Olga Sandoval) & Rebecca, and her 6 grandchildren (Ethan, Kesly, Devin, Emily, Bailey & Daniel).

Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 12:00 PM in the Lehi 8th Ward Chapel, 127 East 3200 North. A viewing will be held Saturday morning from 10:00-11:30 AM prior to the service at the church. Interment, Lehi City Cemetery.

Alan Jay Mulder, BHS '67, Passed Away June 10, 2017

Oh this is so sad to read. Just received an email from Joanne Yoffee Furer who is helping locate folks for our upcoming reunion:

Hi Jim and Cathy,
This is the difficult part of locating our friends and classmates. Yesterday, I told you that I left a message for Alan Mulder. Besides being friends at BHS, we were history majors together at UCLA. Alan commuted from Burbank, but often spent time with Burbank friends who lived on campus.

I realized that I heard something about a landscaping business when I left the message for Alan. Last night I was curious about Alan getting into the landscaping business, so I Googled that – only to make a heartbreaking discovery. There was an article describing the sadness of a local worker killed by a passing automobile in Agoura, CA. The article was from June 15 of this year; Alan died from the accident on June 10, 2017. The article includes a beautiful family photo that includes his wife (Margie), 2 sons (Christopher & Michael), 2 daughters-in-law and 8 grandchildren.

Here is the link to the article: http://www.theacorn.com/news/2017-06-15/Community/Worker_killed_while_stopped_on_Reyes_Adobe_Road.html

I’m not sure that anyone is checking the business phone. I’ll try to see if there is a way to reach Alan’s family to let them know friends from BHS’67 send our condolences and love.

Life is so fragile and precious.

Joanne

Alan Mulder, a 68-year-old landscape contractor and family patriarch, sustained fatal injuries Saturday, June 10 when a passing car struck him while he was standing next to his work truck on Reyes Adobe Road in Agoura Hills.

Mulder was working on a landscaping job for the City of Agoura Hills along the north side of the road near Rainbow Crest when the accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m.

While his work truck and utility wagon were parked on the shoulder of the road, a car driven by a 74-year-old woman approached from behind.

“She apparently thought she had sufficient clearance to pass, but must have misjudged it so she hit the back of the utility trailer and sideswiped the vehicle until she reached the truck driver’s door where Mulder was standing and getting ready to enter his truck,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective David Huelsen said.

Mulder was transported to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks where he died from his injuries.

The driver who hit Mulder stopped and cooperated with authorities. Her name was not released, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation, Huelsen said.

Mulder is survived by his wife, Margie, who is a retired teacher from the Las Virgenes Unified School District; two adult sons, Christopher and Michael, and their wives; and eight grandchildren.

He and his wife came to Agoura Hills more than 25 years ago.

“He was a faithful, dedicated, hard-working husband, father, grandfather, brother and son,” the Mulder family told The Acorn in a statement.

He served as a deacon at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sun Valley.

Mulder grew up in Burbank and earned a history degree from UCLA.

He later became a licensed landscape contractor and arborist, and founded Agoura Hills-based Savanna Landscape Inc., which has provided lawn care and landscaping services to commercial and residential clients in Ventura and Los Angeles counties for the past 30 years.

Memorial donations may be made to the two charities he supported: World Vision and The Salvation Army

How sad. We spent lots of time together on Angeleno, in school, and out hanging around. He, Bill Bric, Kent Barcus and I were Burbank Police Explorers together. He, Larry Hoberman, John Ferguson, Ron Panich and I played little league on the same team. Alan, Paul Munch, Julie Fear and I took driver training together with Pete LePera. Alan recruited me to join the Burbank Track Club after high school. When I got back from Vietnam and was stationed in Detroit, I drove to Grand Rapids to visit him and his sister Joyce at the religious college they were attending. I last spoke with him in February, 1974 when we were both at community hospital. His father was dying. So was my stepfather. I regret that we didn't remain in touch. So many stories together.

I ran with Rich for about 4 years. He was a natural leader and a great friend. He was always happy and ready to have a good time. I'm glad he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren in his last days. His daughter words were a great tribute to Rich. Besides being a loving father she said he was the only person she new that spent time at the South Pole and the North Pole. He loved adventure even back in High School. He was the leader he made the plans for every weekend. The last time I saw Rich he was driving from Idaho to LA for his work. Mike Gould, BHS '67, Passed Away Today

We are so very sad to share that friend and classmate, Mike Gould, passed away today.

Kathy, his wife, posted on Facebook:
"At 2:45 PM today my precious beautiful husband Mike made his transition and with him with a piece of my soul. Thank you all for your many prayers. I will miss him so much."

Later she posted:
"This rainbow showed up right after Mike's transition and will forever be Mike's rainbow to me."

In 2014, Mike suffered a stroke that left him blind, bedridden and on full hospice care.

Please keep Kathy and the Gould family in your thoughts and prayers.
