Burbank on Parade 2008 Photos

Thanks Linda Mustion! Below are photos she took of yesterday's parade with the Alumni Drill Team and our class of '67 Anson Williams as Grand Marshall.

The BHS Centennial Booth took 1st Place in the Novelty Section receiving a trophy and the first band was from BHS. Also in the parade was BHS principal Bruce Osgood with teacher & centennial chairman, Dave Thomson.

And no 50's parade would be complete without ELVIS!

Greg Sanders '68

Received this friendly email from Greg Sanders today - ALOHA GREG!! If you haven't already, be sure to check out the Class of '68 Blog too.

HI Cathy and everyone else!

I was sad to read about my old friend Bill Tideback. Funny how I can remember exact conversations with him after all these eons.

Anyway, I live on the island of Lanai where my wife Sharie and I are the mental health providers for the whole population of 3000 or so. We love it here even though we are very busy and isolated, hence I won't be at the reunion.

I got a call from Jim Ranshaw out of the blue and that got me thinking about Burbank Hi and I found the webpage.

So, aloha to everybody and feel free to email me anytime with news of the folks. I haven't been back to Burbank in decades so I'm sure lots have happened, unlike here. The arrival of our baby goat made the newspaper...with a photo!

Love,
Greg Sanders

I didn't find the news article of your baby goat but did find this great photo of you Greg from a couple of years ago! (source)

Dr. Greg Sanders, Lanai High Behavioral Health Specialist serves as one of the drawing and painting mentors. He is currently teaching oil painting to four students meet him after school several days per week. “We like Dr. Greg because he tells us jokes, but he never laughs at his own jokes,” said one of Sander’s mentees who didn’t want to give his name. “Oh and he’s also a good painter himself. Oh, and he’s always on time and is always there, no matter what. And he likes the pictures we paint.”

Virtual Cemetery

Thank you, Linda, for all your hard work on this virtual cemetery of 1967 deceased classmates. (Click here to see Linda's other links.)

Hi! Cathy

I have been working for awhile on my own special memorial for our 1967 deceased classmates. I was waiting to get a couple of more headstone photos before sending you the link, but after receiving your email in regards to George Key, I decided not to wait any longer before sending the link to our 1967 Find A Frave Memorials that I have created.

How Find A Grave (FAG) works is simple. It is free to registrar and it is like visiting a cemetery from the comfort of home. You can click on my name and see my bio and how long I have been a member and how many memorials and photos I have done. One of the neat things at FAG is you can create your own virtual cemeteries which I have 14 and one is to our 1967 deceased classmates. Another one I just started is BHS deceased alumni with the exception of 1967 as they have their own. I have added many of my family members including my parents who are both buried in Missouri and that is where I will someday be buried.

In regards to George Key, both his parents are deceased and he is buried next to them.

I am sending the link to my FAG Virtual Cemetery for our 1967 deceased classmates. The information I used was from our yearbooks, my research and your website, their Obits. and family and classmates rememberances. The little flower next to their name means that a flower was left for them and most are from me as I left one for each classmate. The little picture frame next to their name means a bio and the small headstone next to their name means there is a photo of their headstone. I think you may want to include each individual link be put under each of their photos on your memorial page.

Hope you enjoy my efforts as it is nice that we remember our deceased classmates. The good thing is I can update the information as I get more infro...........

I will be working all day Sat. at the BHS Cent. Booth at Burbank On Parade.......

take care!........

Neep Help to Staff Booth at Parade Saturday

Hello All,

Just a reminder that the next meeting of the Burbank High Centennial Committee will on Wednesday, April 30 at 6:30 pm in the BHS Library. The easiest parking and entrance is on Harvard Street.

We need help this Saturday (April 26) staffing the Centennial booth at Burbank on Parade. Bruce, Fred, and I all have school obligations on Saturday, and although Bruce and I will be at the parade, we will not be able to stay and help with the booth. I am trying to get a few students to help, but many of them have AP finals this weekend. We need some alumni to staff the booth and sell Centennial merchandise (pins, hats, shirts, sweatshirts), and hand out information about the website, Centennial book ads, and Centennial events.

Please let me know how you can help, and please contact your committee member to help as well.

Thank you,
Dave

Can You Serve?

Hi Cathy...
The following email was sent to me and Herb Vincent...Thought perhaps, some of your readers might be interested or know of someone who is...Pam

Herb and Pam:

Dave Thomson asked that I write regarding the Burbank High School Distinguished Alumni Award Commitee. Along with faculty members Rich Sarquiz and Gabe Margve, I am helping Dave out with the commitee and specifically seating members of the committee. Dave suggested I contact the both of you for referrals of individuals who may be interested in serving on the committee. We are seeking an alumni from the 1940's or 1950 as well as one alumni from the 1960's or 1970's for the Committee. Dave said you may be able to send out e-mail blasts to alumni or know of someone that may be interested.

As far as committment goes, the individual would be needed to meet once in mid-late may as well as once in June to select those individuals that will be inducted into the innagural Hall of Fame Class. The committement is annual, so all that would be needed this year is those meeetings, but those interested can continue involvement so long as they desire. If you know of anyone that may be interested, please forward this e-mail to them and have them contact me by e-mail.

Thanks

Real Troopers!

Ya'll look GREAT with your pompoms!!! So sorry the practice was canceled at the last minute but am glad you took the photo, Cathy - THANKS!!

Cathy Coyle (BHS '67), Joan Chandler (BHS '57), and Lee Paysinger (BHS '52)

Hi CP:
Today John and I went to the Alumni Drill Team Practice & Photo Shoot.

We were surprised to see we were the only ones there until Lee Paysinger (BHS '52) and Joan Chandler (BHS '57) showed up. We found out that the practice had been canceled due to overcast weather.

The Alumni Drill Team was formed in 1987 with former Drill Team and Band Members from JBHS and BHS. We marched not only in Burbank on Parade each year but were also invited to march in the Annual Montrose Christmas Parade. We would wear tights, longsleeve turtlenecks and Santa Claus hats to bear the cold weather.

One time while marching in the Burbank On Parade it started pouring down rain. Bill Kuzma, who was the Alumni Band Leader at the time, told the Band that they did not have to march in the rain and take the chance of ruining their instruments. Each of them made the choice of staying and marching in the rain. We all got soaking wet.... But we had a great time!

One of my great memories was marching in the Alumni BHS/JBHS Football game in 1987. We put on an actual Pre-Game and Half Time show; including Alumni band, cheerleaders, majorettes, drill team, small flags and banner carriers! Since there were so few Alumni Cheerleaders we also got to help them cheer for our old Alma Mater to a crowd of 4000! It was a great chance to feel 17 again!

We also joined in on the Doo Dah Parade a few times; one time spraying our hair with white spray to make us look even older. I marched with the Alumni Drill Team from 1987 to 1997..... But Joan Chandler and Lee Paysinger have been marching in the Burbank on Parade with the Alumni Drill Team for the past 20 years! They are REAL TROOPERS!

Richard DePerna Founder of The Boston Tea Party Band

I did not know this at all and looking in the Ceralbus, I see Rob DePerna was 2 years behind us - thanks for the info Linda! Read more about Richard on our memorial page.

Cathy.......did you know our deceased classmate Richard DePerna was a founder of the 60's band "The Boston Tea Party" with his brother.

One source list his brother as Mike and another as Robert.

I am sending an attachment and 2 links to check them out.

Anson Grand Marshal for Burbank Parade Next Saturday

Burbank goes back to ’50s

This year’s Burbank on Parade will take participants and the crowd back to the days of poodle skirts.

Burbank Leader
April 18, 2008

By Chris Wiebe

Hula hoops, poodle skirts and saddle shoes will invade Olive Avenue next Saturday, as Burbank on Parade goes “Back to the ’50s Again.”

Actor, producer, director and Burbank High School alumnus Anson Williams, who played Warren ‘Potsie’ Weber on the hit television show “Happy Days,” will be the grand marshal of the parade, which is in its 27th year.

“We were looking for somebody that represented the ’50s,” said Bruce Hoenig, a parade organizer. “He said he’d love to be grand marshal of this year’s Burbank on Parade because it fit with ‘Happy Days’ and what they represent.”

The event, which begins at 11 a.m., will feature early rock ’n’ roll and bebop jazz, in addition to the customary floats and musical grounds, said Sandy Dennis, president of Burbank on Parade.

“The kids and the parents are going to have a ball,” she said. “We’re going to have more ’50s music going up and down that parade route than you can imagine.”

The Olive Avenue procession will also feature local dignitaries like City Council members and executives, as well as state and federal legislators like Rep. Adam Schiff and Assemblyman Paul Krekorian.

And among the groups that will appear on the parade route is a band from Hempdale High School in Pennsylvania, which chose Burbank on Parade as a location this year for their annual band trip, Hoenig said.

“It’s an honor for us that people as far as back east know about Burbank on Parade,” he said.

During parade preparations, veteran organizers are bringing in younger volunteers who are learning what it takes to pull off the event, said Dennis, who has been involved in the parade since its inception.

“After 27 years, some of us are getting worn out,” she said. “Some of the people aren’t running up and down the streets as well anymore.”

New volunteers are learning the nuts and bolts of parade management, handling maps, parking and feeding floats and vehicles into the parade route, Dennis said.

The route is slated to run on Olive Avenue between Lincoln and Lomita streets, Hoenig said.

Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. there will be a craft fair with concessions and music held at George Izay Park, he added.

Last year’s parade, titled “Saluting those who serve,” paid tribute to patriotism and the armed forces, garnering strong support from local military veterans, who joined in the effort.

After a hiatus in 2005, the parade was reprised to great acclaim in 2006, attracting more than 2,000 participants, an attendance level that exceeded the years preceding 2005.

And volunteers and residents are abuzz in anticipation of this year’s event, Dennis said.

“We’re going to see how many people can remember how to hula hoop,” Dennis said. “I’ll be interested to see how many kids are dressed up who actually know what the ’50s was.”

EDITORIAL: Marching to a positive beat

Get ready to rock around the clock — or at least a few blocks.

Whether you’re looking for some good exercise, or to just get to know your community a little better, you’ll have that chance on April 26 along a nearly 1-mile stretch of Olive Avenue.

The annual Burbank on Parade with a ’50s theme will make its way along Olive, showcasing everyone and everything from local Scout troops and classic cars to marching bands and equestrian units, all between Lomita and Lincoln streets.

The parade will take a decidedly retro feel as the parade’s theme is “Back to the ’50s Again.”

And with “Potsie” from “Happy Days” leading the parade, how can you not think back to the days when poodle skirts and hula hoops were all the rage.

That’s right, Burbank High School graduate Anson Williams, best known for his role as Richie Cunningham’s friend and sidekick, will be the grand marshal.

The parade itself is inspired by those days, marching through much of the 1950s as part of the Burbank Junior Chamber of Commerce’s weeklong May Festival of dances, a carnival, baking contests and a pageant.

In the process, it became a tradition as people lined the streets to celebrate this city.

The tradition originally lasted about 12 years, stopping in 1957. But it created some great memories.

Those memories drove some Burbank residents to revive it in 1981.

The parade also took a hiatus in 2005 when waning community interest, scheduling conflicts and strained preparations forced organizers to cancel.

But in 2006, it was back and better than ever.

Parade organizers’ commitment is inspiring, and is a good reminder that even at a time when the popularity of parades is lagging in other cities, Burbank has managed to keep a vital link to its past.

In the process, this city is really celebrating its future. Because much of what we’ll see on parade day is the young. In fact, many of this parade’s organizers are young people, taking the torch from those who with so much devotion maintained the tradition of the parade.

Burbank is a lucky city to be able to march toward the future with such community spirit.

Hi Jim,
Hey great you made the first big blog step! The first thing I did was scan and post the pages from the Ceralbus of all the senior photos here. Then sent an email asking folks to send me recent or old photos that I could post along with any updates, etc. Then I added youtube videos of music from the 60's etc etc.

Yes, very sad to discover those who have died. We have a memorial page on our blog here - this was the most difficult thing to put together - lots of tears.

But in general, the blog thing was easy for me as I already had a few personal ones where I could spout my opinions when no one else would listen to me - lol!

Would it be okay if I posted your email? That way it will spread the word a bit more about your upcoming reunion.

Thanks Jim!

ABSOLUTELY! THIS IS THE E-MAIL I SET UP FOR THE REUNION. HOPEFULLY THIS WAY I WON'T HAVE TO SPEND SO MUCH TIME LOOKING FOR PEOPLE IN TEN YEARS FOR OUR 50TH.

In Memory of Bill Tideback '68

Bill's Senior pic in color and his 11th grade in b&w

Sadly, we share the loss of a BHS Alumni - Bill Tideback, brother of classmate Mike Tideback '67. I remember Bill as a friendly and fun guy in school. May the Lord comfort and bless his family and friends during this time of loss. Thank you Alan and Cathy for the notice.

From Cathy Nicholls Coyle:
How sad. We lost another BHS alumni. I scanned Bill's 11th grade photo and Mike's 12th grade photo so you can post them on your blog.

From Alan Landros:
William "Bill" Tideback passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2008, just short of his 58th birthday. Bill had not felt really well since this past Christmastime, but didn't know what was wrong. Last Tuesday, April 8, he had become so ill that his daughter, Alison, rushed him to the hospital. It was determined that he had an intestinal infection, probably for sometime, and by this time he also had pneumonia in both lungs. Last Wednesday morning Bill was placed on a ventilator and put into a drug induced coma to try and save his life. He remained in the coma until his death on Sunday.

Bill Tideback was born May 2, 1950 in Iowa. He was in the Burbank High Class of 1968. He was very successful throughout his business career, and had retired early within the last two years.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Alison, now 30; his son-in-law, Bobby Castaneda; his 10 month old grandson, Joshua; his 81 year old mother, Fran; his brother, Mike Tideback, (BHS '67); and his former wife, Joyce Starleaf.

After cremation Bill's cremated remains will be interred in the Memorial Garden at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.

A Memorial Service honoring Bill will be this coming Sunday, April 20, at 2:00 P.M. at Salem Lutheran Church, (Joyce's church), in Glendale. Salem Lutheran is at the corner of north Brand Blvd. and Stocker St. in Glendale.
