Some of you may remember a Talent Show when we, the Class of '67, were in 7th grade at John Muir Jr High (now John Muir Middle School) in Burbank, California.

Kent Barcus remembers Don Ray walking across the stage carrying a pail while someone called out, "Where are you going with that bucket?" To which the answer is, "I'm going to watch Wyatt Earp (urp, urp, urp)!"

Don Ray (Ripley) remembers the bucket and says, "I couldn’t remember the line, but I do remember the bucket. How humiliating. I could have been a lucky 'walk on' like Roland Young was. He got to run across the stage pushing a lawn mower chasing a girl in a grass skirt. I remember that I tried out for the talent show by lip synching to the popular song “Alley Oop”. My mother had made me a cool cave man suit, but it wasn’t ready. So when I went out there in 1961-62 clothing, I didn’t impress anyone... I remember that Vern Olson sang, he wore a tuxedo and a top hat and sang a song about dressing up to go on the town. Larry Brown and Dale Loyola teamed up to do a piano and drum duet. Dale was a great drummer — Larry a fantastic piano player. Larry ended up being a successful drummer in a rock band. Strange irony. Didn’t Leland Freeman and Rick Deperna do a guitar duet also? Lee ended up on the band Strawberry Alarm Clock, but wasn’t there the day they recorded 'Incense and Pepperment'. So much talent."

Cathy Nicholls Coyle remembers that the Holst twins played their accordians during that Talent Show & Christie Gibbs & Janet Knight played their ukelelee's.

Cathy Palmer remembers nothing - zip - zero - of the event - lol!

What do you remember?

September 29, 2009 UPDATE

Email from Jeanne Barron Aikman:
"I'm an old salt," "I'm a young salt" "In the navy we've been working very hard." "I was part of that bartela with Dewy and Manila. I'm a new recruit in the Brooklyn Navy yard."

Of course I have no idea what I was singing much less why I remember the words. Had to be the effect of stage fright. At any rate, this is what I remember of that talent show. I believe Georgia Stiny and I dressed up in white sailor pants, shirts and caps and sang the whole song. I remember trying to strut and swagger across the stage. Why are you all doing this to me, I don't think I really wanted to remember! I take that back. I love it that we are all reconstructing our memories together. It's the best!

Oh, and Kent, I think you are right. I think it was Doug Boes.
G"nite all

Carol Nicholls Lebrecht emailed today: I remember that Diana Bush was in the talent show and she sang "They call the wind Mariah": but I couldn't pick her out in the picture.
