Alan Jay Mulder, BHS '67, Passed Away June 10, 2017

Oh this is so sad to read. Just received an email from Joanne Yoffee Furer who is helping locate folks for our upcoming reunion:

Hi Jim and Cathy,
This is the difficult part of locating our friends and classmates. Yesterday, I told you that I left a message for Alan Mulder. Besides being friends at BHS, we were history majors together at UCLA. Alan commuted from Burbank, but often spent time with Burbank friends who lived on campus.

I realized that I heard something about a landscaping business when I left the message for Alan. Last night I was curious about Alan getting into the landscaping business, so I Googled that – only to make a heartbreaking discovery. There was an article describing the sadness of a local worker killed by a passing automobile in Agoura, CA. The article was from June 15 of this year; Alan died from the accident on June 10, 2017. The article includes a beautiful family photo that includes his wife (Margie), 2 sons (Christopher & Michael), 2 daughters-in-law and 8 grandchildren.

Here is the link to the article: http://www.theacorn.com/news/2017-06-15/Community/Worker_killed_while_stopped_on_Reyes_Adobe_Road.html

I’m not sure that anyone is checking the business phone. I’ll try to see if there is a way to reach Alan’s family to let them know friends from BHS’67 send our condolences and love.

Life is so fragile and precious.

Joanne

Alan Mulder, a 68-year-old landscape contractor and family patriarch, sustained fatal injuries Saturday, June 10 when a passing car struck him while he was standing next to his work truck on Reyes Adobe Road in Agoura Hills.

Mulder was working on a landscaping job for the City of Agoura Hills along the north side of the road near Rainbow Crest when the accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m.

While his work truck and utility wagon were parked on the shoulder of the road, a car driven by a 74-year-old woman approached from behind.

“She apparently thought she had sufficient clearance to pass, but must have misjudged it so she hit the back of the utility trailer and sideswiped the vehicle until she reached the truck driver’s door where Mulder was standing and getting ready to enter his truck,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective David Huelsen said.

Mulder was transported to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks where he died from his injuries.

The driver who hit Mulder stopped and cooperated with authorities. Her name was not released, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation, Huelsen said.

Mulder is survived by his wife, Margie, who is a retired teacher from the Las Virgenes Unified School District; two adult sons, Christopher and Michael, and their wives; and eight grandchildren.

He and his wife came to Agoura Hills more than 25 years ago.

“He was a faithful, dedicated, hard-working husband, father, grandfather, brother and son,” the Mulder family told The Acorn in a statement.

He served as a deacon at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sun Valley.

Mulder grew up in Burbank and earned a history degree from UCLA.

He later became a licensed landscape contractor and arborist, and founded Agoura Hills-based Savanna Landscape Inc., which has provided lawn care and landscaping services to commercial and residential clients in Ventura and Los Angeles counties for the past 30 years.

Memorial donations may be made to the two charities he supported: World Vision and The Salvation Army

How sad. We spent lots of time together on Angeleno, in school, and out hanging around. He, Bill Bric, Kent Barcus and I were Burbank Police Explorers together. He, Larry Hoberman, John Ferguson, Ron Panich and I played little league on the same team. Alan, Paul Munch, Julie Fear and I took driver training together with Pete LePera. Alan recruited me to join the Burbank Track Club after high school. When I got back from Vietnam and was stationed in Detroit, I drove to Grand Rapids to visit him and his sister Joyce at the religious college they were attending. I last spoke with him in February, 1974 when we were both at community hospital. His father was dying. So was my stepfather. I regret that we didn't remain in touch. So many stories together.

I remember Diana being a wonderful, fun-loving friend with an infectious smile and sparkling eyes.

We send our deepest condolences and prayers to Diana's husband Jim (married almost 45 years), their sons and daughter, James, Joel and Jackie, and their seven precious grandchildren.

Jim's heartbreaking reply to my inquiry was, "Sorry to inform you that my sweet Loving Wife, my life and best friend Diana past away In June 2014. I miss her so much. Thank you."

Diana and Jim lived in Burbank when she succumbed to a heart attack.

"Here is the last picture I have of Diana before she passed away." - Jim

Thanks to Dona Foy Porcaro Bruckner for getting us all together years back.

Dona Foy Porcaro Bruckner
Mark, I was just thinking about our time with Rich and the fun we had. May he rest in peace😂

James L Vignale
I ran with Rich for about 4 years. He was a natural leader and a great friend. He was always happy and ready to have a good time. I'm glad he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren in his last days. His daughter words were a great tribute to Rich. Besides being a loving father she said he was the only person she new that spent time at the South Pole and the North Pole. He loved adventure even back in High School. He was the leader he made the plans for every weekend. The last time I saw Rich he was driving from Idaho to LA for his work. He stayed overnight in Las Vegas and called me and I met him at the hotel he was staying at and we had a great time. RIP Rich a life well lived.

We are so very sad to share that friend and classmate, Mike Gould, passed away today.

Kathy, his wife, posted on Facebook:
"At 2:45 PM today my precious beautiful husband Mike made his transition and with him with a piece of my soul. Thank you all for your many prayers. I will miss him so much."

Later she posted:
"This rainbow showed up right after Mike's transition and will forever be Mike's rainbow to me."

In 2014, Mike suffered a stroke that left him blind, bedridden and on full hospice care.

Please keep Kathy and the Gould family in your thoughts and prayers.
