(Thanks, Cathy Nicholls Coyle, for Highlander photo!)

Some of you may remember a Talent Show when we, the Class of '67, were in 7th grade at John Muir Jr High (now John Muir Middle School) in Burbank, California.

Kent Barcus remembers Don Ray walking across the stage carrying a pail while someone called out, "Where are you going with that bucket?" To which the answer is, "I'm going to watch Wyatt Earp (urp, urp, urp)!"

Don Ray (Ripley) remembers the bucket and says, "I couldn’t remember the line, but I do remember the bucket. How humiliating. I could have been a lucky 'walk on' like Roland Young was. He got to run across the stage pushing a lawn mower chasing a girl in a grass skirt. I remember that I tried out for the talent show by lip synching to the popular song “Alley Oop”. My mother had made me a cool cave man suit, but it wasn’t ready. So when I went out there in 1961-62 clothing, I didn’t impress anyone... I remember that Vern Olson sang, he wore a tuxedo and a top hat and sang a song about dressing up to go on the town. Larry Brown and Dale Loyola teamed up to do a piano and drum duet. Dale was a great drummer — Larry a fantastic piano player. Larry ended up being a successful drummer in a rock band. Strange irony. Didn’t Leland Freeman and Rick Deperna do a guitar duet also? Lee ended up on the band Strawberry Alarm Clock, but wasn’t there the day they recorded 'Incense and Pepperment'. So much talent."

Cathy Nicholls Coyle remembers that the Holst twins played their accordians during that Talent Show & Christie Gibbs & Janet Knight played their ukelelee's.

Cathy Palmer remembers nothing - zip - zero - of the event - lol!

What do you remember?

September 29, 2009 UPDATE

Email from Jeanne Barron Aikman:
"I'm an old salt," "I'm a young salt" "In the navy we've been working very hard." "I was part of that bartela with Dewy and Manila. I'm a new recruit in the Brooklyn Navy yard."

Of course I have no idea what I was singing much less why I remember the words. Had to be the effect of stage fright. At any rate, this is what I remember of that talent show. I believe Georgia Stiny and I dressed up in white sailor pants, shirts and caps and sang the whole song. I remember trying to strut and swagger across the stage. Why are you all doing this to me, I don't think I really wanted to remember! I take that back. I love it that we are all reconstructing our memories together. It's the best!

Oh, and Kent, I think you are right. I think it was Doug Boes.
G"nite all

September 30, 2009 UPDATE
Carol Nicholls Lebrecht emailed today: I remember that Diana Bush was in the talent show and she sang "They call the wind Mariah": but I couldn't pick her out in the picture.

Severe Middle Age - Blog by Kent Barcus

Received the following email from Kent Barcus - thanks Kent!

Hi Cathy,

Hope you're doing well with the beginning of fall. I connected a blog story on Facebook earlier and thought I'd send you a link for BHS'67. Spent an interesting twelve hours at work Friday while an anonymous department or two of an unnamed public entity in the Bay Area worked out a re-closing of a prior fiscal year which meant taking its general ledger system off-line on a business day and hoping for the best. It worked in spite of us.

Got a reunion with Kennedy relatives coming up thanks to cousins in Tulsa. First time in over fifty years we've held a gathering like this.

Hope we get to see you again before long--we always enjoy time in Sonoma County.

BHS Class '64 Lonny Scott 1946-2009

Received another sad email from Pam Kirkwood over the weekend...

Wow, I am getting names of classmates who have passed away faster than I can keep up with them...

I just got word this morning that the BHS Class of '64 lost Lonny Scott today...

Don't know any details yet, except that he had been ill and had been in a convalescent home.
Our class has lost 74, that we know of, at this point.

Vietnam Wall Memorial

BHS '67 classmate and researcher, Linda Mustion, volunteered this past weekend at the traveling replica of the Vietnam Wall in Westlake Village.

Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall

Replica of Vietnam War Memorial visits Westlake Village

A three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., spent six days at Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks Memorial Park.

From Sept. 4 through 7, it was open to the public around the clock. Hundreds of volunteers, taking 15-minute shifts each, read aloud the more than 58,000 names on the wall, including rank and military branch.

Friends and relatives of the soldiers, nurses and others killed or missing in action shared memories and sentiments, leaving mementos, flowers, photographs, poems and American flags at the base of the 8 foot high, 240 foot long memorial.

On Monday all of the mementos were placed in a time capsule and buried at Pierce Bros.

“You realize every one of those names was a person with a family and how many people were impacted by that death,” said Janet Robertson of Oak Park, who volunteered to read names along with her husband, Scott. “It’s very emotional to see what people left below and to know somebody visited the wall or that person.”

Vietnam veteran Mike Fujinaga wanted to pay homage to his buddies killed in the war that ran throughout the ’60s and early ’70s. For the Newbury Park resident, who’s never visited the permanent memorial, the traveling version offered him an opportunity to remember one friend in particular, Larry Gene “Leo” Leopoldino. The two friends were the only Hawaiians in their Army platoon. Leopoldino was killed by a sniper in 1969, three months into his tour of duty. A water bottle filled with flowers marked the spot below the panel bearing Leopoldino’s name.

“I have a few buddies on the wall who were killed in 1969,” Fujinaga said. “They’ll always be young.”

Westlake Village resident Patty Smith stood by panel 45 holding a pencil rubbing she’d made of the name of family friend Michael E. Constantine, who was killed in action. Overwhelmed by the sight of so many names, Smith had help from volunteers in finding Constantine’s name.

“Once you see the name you’re drawn to, it pops out at you,” said Smith, whose brothera Simi Valley resident, was a Marine in Vietnam.

Each name was marked with a symbol—a star signified killed in action, body recovered; a cross meant missing in action, body not recovered.

Eight women’s names are on the wall, seven Army nurses and an Air Force nurse; 16 chaplains’ names are listed, as is that of Daniel Bullock, believed to be the youngest American casualty of the war at age 15. Bullock forged his birth certificate and entered the Marines at age 14.

Volunteers were on hand to help visitors research names of fallen soldiers through a computerized system, as well as a thick book. Linda Mustion drove from Burbank to spend the weekend volunteering at the exhibit.

A military researcher and biographer, Mustion said the Vietnam War had particular meaning for her, having lost two classmates from the Burbank High School Class of 1967.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 754 of Newbury Park helped direct visitors. The boys camped out on Friday night with plans to do morning cleanup around the memorial.

“I didn’t really know that much about the war, but today I learned that it really was an important war,” said Boy Scout Christopher Fields, 12, who held a flashlight for nighttime visitors along with fellow scout Francesco Antinoro, 12.

The memorial arrived on Wed., Sept. 2, accompanied from Bakersfield by a motorcade of veterans and others that included 315 motorcycles. The reflective faux granite panels were assembled by U.S. Navy Seabees from Port Hueneme. Several hundred plants were donated by a local nursery, said Phyllis Grabot, co-chair of the event with Bonnie Quintanilla. A Purple Heart ceremony and a concert featuring patriotic songs were among the weekend events.

Sponsored by the Dignity Memorial Network, the replica was created in 1990 to honor the men and women of the U.S. military and to allow Americans nationwide to experience the exhibit. The monument has been in 200 cities, sponsored by a local Dignity Memorial provider, with support from local veterans and civic groups and businesses.

The monument will next be on display in Phoenix.

Dan Smith III and his wife, Gail, helped coordinate the exhibit. Smith, who is from Riverside, spent 196870 as a Marine in Vietnam. He said the names of many of his friends are on the wall.

“Vietnam was controversial from the start. The men and women who fought there were looked down upon, and a lot of Vietnam veterans are still suffering. All they did is follow orders,” Smith said.

“I don’t think we can ever do enough for those 58,000 names on the wall. It’s important to remember, reflect and heal.”

Gary Arthur Lundquist 1944 - 2009

Senior photos from 1962 Ceralbus

Today received sad news that Gary Lundquist, BHS class '62, passed away last week. He was the youngest of Carl and Anne's five children.

Growing up down the street from the Lundquist home, I personally have many wonderful memories of this loving family. When Gary and Shirley started their family, I babysat Lori, Scott and Angie every now and again. Gary's brother, Carl, married my sister, Patricia.

While in the US Air Force, Gary got Systemic Lupus which went into remission but flare-ups over the years compromised his immune system that led to a lung fungus which tragically caused his death.

Please keep Shirley, also a BHS class '62 grad, and her family in your prayers during this difficult time of loss...

Email dated September 3, 2009:
This morning we lost Gary.
He will surely be missed.
He passed peacefully in his sleep, without struggle.
His family was near.
Thank you for your prayers and support.
He is now breathing easy, and is joined with so many loved ones that went before him.
He is soaring in the heavens, watching over us all.

Please see the attachment.

The Lord bless and keep us.

You are always on our minds...
Gary Arthur Lundquist
December 7, 1944 ~ September 3, 2009

Don’t grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path God has laid you see.
I took his hand when I heard his call,
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I found peace at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joys.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Oh yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts, and peace to thee....
God wanted me now, He set me free.

I’ll be loving you…ALWAYS

Donald Robert Tone 1946-2009

Received this just now from Pam Kirkwood and are praying for Don's family.
