1963 Essay Winners

L-R: Lee Drost (2nd place), Bev Bullock (1st place) and Don Ray (3rd place) won the John Muir Fire Prevention Essay Contest back in 1963 when we were in 9th grade.

Don wanted to relive the moment when he and Bev met up our 40th reunion!

Don says, "Strange. I got fat and ugly, she grew even more beautiful than she was back then."

PS Annette Dinolfo Bennett (BHS'69) is in the background of the 2007 pic!

MAY 19, 2013 UPDATE

Received this email today...

Hi Cathy,

I was googling for an image of Horace Mann Elementary School to put on my Facebook timeline, and what is the very first search result? A "3rd" grade class photo including me, in Miss Aikins class. Since you are looking for unknown students' names, I thought I would ID myself. My name, then, was Carlyn Patton, and I am sitting in the front row, the 4th girl from the right, plaid dress with the white top section.

What a fun surprise!

Dave LeSueur (BHS '67) Has a New Blog!

Hi friends and family:

I have written a new column which I submitted to the Denver Post yesterday. However, rather than send you the link at the Post, I am linking a blog I set up. It contains all of the stuff I've written recently. Most are general interest, but a few were written about the LDS Church or Multiple Sclerosis. The current article ("Universal Remote Controls") should be on the front page, but you can use the labels to find other ones.

Also, this was sent to us from Carolyn Bailey Grogan '63...
Jerry Durham (63) passed away. Jerry had cancer throughout his body and had been quite ill for a time.

Carl Guin 1962, passed away on August 3, after suffering a massive stroke in July. Carl was the twin brother of Carol Kay Guinn Newman '62.

Update from Jay Chris Peterson ('BHS '67)

Here is the latest on the Peterson house. NO it will not be yellow, thats the color of the siding. Thinking of a green called "breakwater".

Door company gave us the transom glass above the door by accident. That was a $800 mistake of theirs. Our contractor said "gee, that's a nice house warming gift."

Fireplace is on steroids......picking rock soon.

What Makes Wes Happy?

Q. What makes Wes Clark BHS '74 happy?
A. Teacakes and a clock!

Today Wes posted the following on my Facebook wall along with this great photo - lol!

Mike McDaniel and family drove 3,000 miles east to do some tourism. Look what Mike brought me: an honest-to-goodness BHS classroom clock (from room 214) that I plan to use in my garage and a box of Martino's teacakes. **I have the only six Martino's teacakes east of the Mississippi!**

If you haven't already, be sure to check out Mike and Wes' BURBANKIA website.

And read more about MARTINOS.

Gary Smestad BHS '64 (1946-2010)

Sadly, we share that Gary Smestad died in his sleep Sunday, August 8, 2010.

Joan Ortega said he had not been feeling great having had back issues for a couple weeks.

In 1990, Gary's younger brother, Dewey Smestad (class of '67 but moved to San Jose before senior yr), proceeded him in death at age 42.

We offer our deepest condolances to Gary's wife, Karen, to their children/grandchildren and to all his loved ones, praying for the LORD's comfort.

"RIP Gary Smestad. We will miss you beyond words."
Long time friends, Fred and Joan (Nobile) Ortega

Karen (Shield) Smestad (BHS '64) and Gary

August 10, 2010 UPDATE from Pam Kirkwood:

It is with heavy hearts that Jon and I send you this "Loop" in honor and memory of our good friend and BHS '64 Classmate, Gary Smestad...

Gary passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Sunday, August 8th.

Gary was married to Karen Shield Smestad, also a BHS '64 graduate. He was a wonderful Dad, Grandfather, Brother and Uncle...as well as a good friend to so many...

Gary was a Marine and proud of it. He was always present at every Memorial Day and Veterans' Day Ceremony at Mc Cambridge Park.

He was a member of the Burbank Elks and would frequently drop in to say "hi" to all of us who were attending the Senior Bulldog Luncheons at the Elks.

Gary was also proud to be a Burbank High Graduate and was a loyal Bulldog...He and Karen were always part of our BHS Class of '64 Reunion Committee Team.

We will truly miss seeing that great smile of his, as he pulled up in his red Corvette...and we will miss those big "bear hugs" he always had for everyone.

For those of you who have "put off" going to your class reunions...ya really shouldn't...You just never know who will not be there at the next one. We were very fortunate to be able to share many happy times with Gary and Karen. We are grateful for those memories...

There will be a "Celebration of Life" for Gary this coming Sunday, August 15th, at the Burbank Elks Lodge located at 2232 N. Hollywood Way, at 12 Noon.

We hope to see many of you there as we honor our friend's life.

Semper Fi, Gary...and may God Bless You

Underdog Railroad Update

Just received this update from Andrea Moxness (BHS '67) - thanks Andrea!

I hope you remember that I started to transport rescue dogs last year. After my first dog run, though, I wasn't contacted to help anymore. I tried a couple other groups and never heard from them. Thankfully, I reconnected with the original group and they are now bringing more dogs up the particular route I can drive. So I did another transport at the end of June, and I believe I'll be doing another this Saturday, 8/14. So please don't give up on my Underdog Railroad blog, and check out the most recent addition. Go to: underdograilroad.blogspot.com.

Thanks, and woof woof!

Ventura ~ San Diego Ride with Shari

Found these great pics of Shari Deuel Nicholls (BHS '67) and friends who went on a 2 day bike ride:
Day 1 ~ Ventura to Corona del Mar ~ 115 mi
Day 2 ~ Corona del Mar to San Diego ~ 83 mi

 - YOU GO GIRL!!!

August 5, 2010 ADDENDUM

Hi Cathy
Thanks for posting. Thats the ride I do about once a month. The tall guy is Kevin. We met him that afternoon when we stopped in a local Newport Beach bike shop. A funny thing happened! I walked into this bike shop and this handsome man(not the one in the pic) was walking towards me. Probably going to ask me if I needed help. Well, I recognized him! He was 1 of the 2 riders I crewed for on Race Across America-3 yrs ago! He knew me but couldn't remember where from. It was a great "reunion". Now I'm going to crew for him as he rides a 508mi race! Starts in Valencia, Palmdale, California City, Death Valley, that little place wwest of Vegas and ends in 29Palms. Now that's crazy!! On the bike ride to SD, I carry by lil camelbak, taking the bladder out. I rolled up that little black dress, belt, travel size flat-iron and my flipflops are strapped to the outside. Even can get makeup and toothbrush in. I use the flatiron bag for a purse! That was the 1st time I'd seen Tanya in askirt! We went out with Madelaine Zelaney Whiteman that evening. Had some great laughs and fun time!
I did a lil over 500 miles in those 8 days.
It looks like Florida is agreeing with you! Beautiful pics! Keep them coming!

Eddie Meador

LINK TO EMAIL NOMINATION: http://www.profootballhof.com/service/contact.aspx

Marty Uribe (BHS '69), Ed Meador and Bob Gorrie (BHS '70)

EMAIL FROM GIL URIBE (BHS '66):

My friends and Pals,

Please take a few minutes to go on this web site and encourage the Hall of Fame committee to put Eddie Meador on the ballot. Some of you helped me and the family last year. We were a few votes short. Eddie Meador as some of you know was a great DB with the Rams in the 60s. Read his BIO on his website and you will agree he should be in the Hall of Fame.

Thanks for you time and help!!!

Fight On!!!,

Gilbys

--- On Mon, 8/2/10 ---
From: Coach Meador
Subject: Eddie Meador

Good afternoon, everyone.

On behalf of the children of Eddie Meador, I wanted to write you all and remind you that the HOF Selection Committee (for Seniors) will be convening in Canton in the next 2 weeks for this year's induction. Part of what they will do while they are there is decide on the 1 or 2 Seniors to nominate for 2011.

Since you all have shown special interest in the past year, I thought you may want to consider writing one or two of the Seniors Selection Committee members to plead your case. A list of them is on the HOF website under "Selection Process". They have an asterisk by their names. Then, you could go to our website
http://www.edmeador21.com/ for their e-mail addresses.

Know that the Meador family has been greatly touched by all your support in the past. If you have the desire, please feel free to send a positive e-mail as these committee members get ready to whittle down their list in the upcoming days.

With fingers crossed,
Dave Meador

FOLLOW UP EMAIL FROM GIL:

Just a quick follow up message about the ED HOF project. A quick story of my history with EM.

My brother and family met Eddie Meador several years ago when Marty (brother) received an award from Burbank Rec and Parks. See photo attached. I remember how EM took time out to meet and talk to each one of my family members including me. At the time he was the starting safety for the Rams and was one of the best DB's in the NFL. He was kind, courteous and thoughtful to our family and I remember how impressed I was that a star NFL athlete took the time to come to Burbank to give a sports award and meet each family member. He was a special person and outstanding football player.

Thanks again for all your help!!

Just got this e-mail tonight from Eddie Meador's son Dave Meador.

Please read how to effectively nominate EM for the senior HOF!!!

Thanks so much, Gil. We knew we could count on you and "the nation" to come through!

From what I understand, Dad is being talked about among the "powers that be". I've been told that as long as the committee doesn't get bombarded with long, "cookie cutter" e-mails, and if the e-mails are brief, positive, and contain substance (they are aware of stats and such), then we probably won't tick anyone off or drive their thoughts away from Dad. We learned that lesson last year.

We sure appreciate you guys! Won't it be so cool if we hear his name in the upcoming days?! If that happens, we will surely be proud of him and everybody who had a hand in his nomination.

Thanks so much. Feel free to pass this on to the nation as well!

Go #21,
Dave Meador
