George Colvin's NASCAR Driving!

From the Loop (Pam & Jon Kirkwood):

George Colvin '65 (NASCAR'S NEWEST ROOKIE) wrote...

Sorry, some of you guys asked how I got to do this. I should have explained that Shirley gave me this as a Birthday gift. It was 8 laps at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Ca. It is called the Richard Petty driving experience - www.1800BePetty.com
It gives you the chance to see what NACAR drivers get to do all the time. It was a great time.

I could have driven at any track in the U.S. but chose this one because it was the closest and it was also one of the longest tracks at two miles and had a higher bank track.

Thanks,
George

Check out George's NASCAR Driving!! See below or go to www.youtube.com/gmcolvin and click on NASCAR. His top speed was 163.40 MPH

Happy Trails: Roy Rogers and Dale Evans

Who remembers Roy & Dale? I work with some young people who never heard of 'em - lol!

FROM WIKIPEDIA:
Roy Rogers (born Leonard Franklin Slye) (November 5, 1911 – July 6, 1998), was a singer and cowboy actor, as well as the namesake of the Roy Rogers Restaurants chain. He and his second wife Dale Evans, his golden palomino Trigger, and his German Shepherd Dog, Bullet, were featured in over one hundred movies and The Roy Rogers Show. The show ran on radio for nine years before moving to television from 1951 through 1957. His productions usually featured a sidekick, often either Pat Brady, (who drove a jeep called "Nellybelle") or the crotchety Gabby Hayes. Roy's nickname was "King of the Cowboys". Dale's nickname was "Queen of the West."

Posting this because Alan Landros mentioned in a recent email that his parents knew Roy Rogers and Dale Evans! They all attended Dr. Jack MacArthur's church in Hollywood before he was born and his folks along with his uncle sang on MacArthur's radio program, "The Voice of Calvary" every week along with Dale Evans Rogers.

I asked him if he ever met Trigger as a kid and Alan replied: I never met Trigger alive, but I have seen him "stuffed" in their Apple Valley museum.

Below is a great video clip of Roy singing 'Don't Fence Me In' in the 1944 movie, 'Hollywood Canteen' (my cousin, Joan Leslie, was also in this movie) - here is the movie trailer.

60 Minutes with an Artist: Scott Bruckner

Sent to me today was this article on BHS class '66 alumni Scott Bruckner who is a talented sculptor.

Here is one of his latest works.

Final piece is 4 ft tall, has 63 hangers and is currently displayed at the Westfield Valencia Town Center.

10/13/09 ARTICLE
LATEST PUBLIC ART EXHIBIT AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING AT WESTFIELD VALENCIA TOWN CENTER

The City of Santa Clarita invites community members to view the Art Challenge, the latest installment of the City’s Public Art Exhibits featured at the Westfield Valencia Town Center. The exhibit is available for viewing through January 12, 2010 and features one of a kind art pieces created by local artists using materials exclusively from stores in the Valencia Town Center mall.

The City of Santa Clarita’s Arts Advisory Committee chose six local artists to be featured in the Challenge. Each artist was assigned to a specific retailer in the mall to create a one-of-a-kind art piece using materials comprised exclusively of materials from their designated store. Local artist Erin Scott was assigned to the Sweet Factory; Nicholas Fedak II to No Fear; Diane Foderaro to Puzzle Zoo; Daryl Bibicoff to Utopia; LT Mustardseed to Just Paws; and Scott Bruckner to White House/Black Market.

“The Art Challenge at the Westfield Valencia Town Center gives local artists the chance to showcase how one-of-a-kind art pieces can be created with limited materials,” said Mayor Frank Ferry. “The six exhibits also give residents the opportunity to view exceptional art in a centralized location.”

Additional City Public Art Exhibits are scheduled to take place throughout the year across Santa Clarita, including events at City Hall’s First Floor Gallery, public spaces and more.

For more information on the City’s public art program, including the current exhibit at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, please contact the City’s Arts and Events office at (661) 286-4018 or visit http://www.santa-clarita.com/.

Alan and Blyden's Story on YouTube

source

FROM UCLA HEALTH:
Friends since childhood but separated by years and geography, Alan Landros and Blyden Loutensock found each other again in a time of need.

And when it came time for Loutensock to make a choice to help his old friend - Landros needed a life-saving transplant after polycystic kidney disease had nearly destroyed his organs - he didn't hesitate to donate one of his own kidneys.

"We get one chance to live our lives and do good things," says Loutensock. "It will literally be a chance to give Alan his life back, and that's why I'm doing it."

The two men had met in grade school in Burbank, California. They remained friends through high school but afterward went their separate ways. Loutensock was living in Utah with his wife and children when word came to him that Landros was ill. He immediately decided he would help if he could, and when testing determined he was a good match he spent two years losing 40 pounds and undergoing rigorous physical training to prepare for the surgery.

Landros was overwhelmed to learn that his old friend, whom he had not seen in many years, had come forward to help him. "It's hard to put into words someone wanting to do this much for you," he says. "Saying thank you' seems so inadequate."

Forty-six years after they first men, Landros and Loutensock were together at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where Dr. Albin Gritsch, surgical director of the UCLA Kidney Transplant Program, would oversee the operation.

First, Loutensock underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove one of his kidneys. Then, Landros received the transplant. "With a living donor kidney transplant, it's particularly special," says Dr. Gritsch. "Blyden's kidney worked right away, and it started to clean Alan's blood right away. The story still moves me every time I think about it."

Polycystic kidney disease affects nearly 1-in-1,000 Americans. The disease, also known as PKD, is one of the most-common life-threatening genetic diseases in the world. Visit our health encyclopedia to learn more about polycystic kidney disease.

Memories

Hi,
I can't believe the website you created! I am the guy in the photo of the ko's! I still have that photo, and I find it amazing that you found it. I will never forget the night that Bobbie Grumbly approached me at Bob's Big Boy in Toluca lake and told me that I was their choice to be their mascot. It probably didn't hurt that Diane Rupprecht was my girlfriend, but what the hell!

Anyway, it is so nice that there are people like you that will take the time and effort to create and save our memories.

Meeting Up with Burbank Friends

After Dona (Foy) Bruckner picked me up at the Burbank Bob Hope Airport, we met up with Sara (Marino) Becaria at Starbucks, got caught up and then went to dinner at the Elephant Bar - a GREAT time!

Sara and I were best of friends at Miller when she lived on Cedar across the street from the school. Then her family moved to Orange Grove and there she became Dona's buddy in junior high!

Today, Sara and her husband Eddie live in Burbank and have two grown sons. We had such a fun visit!

Sara, Dona & Cathy at Starbucks in Burbank.

A couple of weeks ago, Dona met up with Sara, Shelly (Perez) Lucero and Pam (Hawkins) Swan - a blast from the past for sure! Turns out Pam lives 10 minutes from Dona and Shelly lives in Burbank where she and her husband have the Clubhouse Grill at DeBell golf course which has a wonderful menu including the delcious Smoke House garlic bread! An interesting note, each of these four moms have two sons.
